I’ve written previously about how Sheraton targets smart phone users with WLAN access in their suites, as a survey revealed that 35 percent would rather bring their phone than their spouse through the bedroom door.
Now, a recent UK study goes all the way to bed – finding that 40 percent of men between 18-44 rather log on (with 34 million google hits to “online dating”, who can blame them?) than get it on with their partner in the sack. And a whopping 80 percent say that they could absolutely not survive without logging on everyday (one in four start their day in bed checking their email).
But what about the women? More or less connected? What do you smart folks think?

I would compare newly started relationships (2-4 weeks) to longer relationships (6-10 weeks) since there is the new discovries factor that stimulate the relationship. When there is nothing new to discover and when the internet is offering a potential for new discoveries then the prefrences are changing.
Then you can really have fun with the data with a cross gender, age groups and so on.
Omer,
That’s a great parallel. 34 million online dating opportunities and our inner drive to always “love thy next one”. Joint bed means long relationship, means excitement over.
Do you think women function the same way as men? Or is there an aspect of evolutionary psychology here in a focus on long- versus short-term relationships?

I am a great believer in evolutionary psychology and I think that a world of digital social networks (inc. dating sites) will changes the way we evaluate partnets.
Women will chose men who can maintain a social profile and men will look for women with little previous partners as possible but still physically healthy. Same way of thinking but modernized.
Omer,
The social profile thing is really interesting – the end of dating as we know it, enter networking and indirect matching?
