As a wonderful extension of yesterday’s post comes the news that president Obama has decided to extend people’s ability to share health insurance with their parents by five years from now on, up til the age of 26.
Why extend? Because people stay home so long, which was previously a definition of still being a minor rather than an adult.
Why 26? Because that’s how far he dared go. There’s no other plausible reason, all the classic definitions of adulthood that have previously been used in government assessments – moving out of the parents’ house, marrying, getting a long time job – would require extension well into people’s thirties.
But he’s given up on those. In the Expectations society, yestermillennium standards of life no longer apply.
